Once upon a midnight dreary,
As I wandered, weak and weary,
Through an enchanted forest of forgotten fears,
I found a girl drowning in tears.

I went to her, through thunder's clatter,
And presently asked what was the matter.
She looked at me, through foggy eyes,
Said everything she breathed was lies.

Thunder cracked and then rain fell
This girl said that life was hell.
She looked at me, and with a sigh
She then decided she should die.

From nowhere she pulled a knife,
Announced that she would end her life
To put a stop to all her pain
She would perish in the rain.

Then I looked deep in her eyes
Past the pain and past her cries
I found myself inside her mind
And looked to see what I could find.

I found a room that once was bright
But now was burned and black as night
A once-clean carpet caked with mud
Was also soaked in someone's blood.

I looked around the girl's soul
In the center was a hole
In this hole there was a flame
From the fire, someone came.

I looked at it, it gazed at me
And then I felt the urge to flee.
It opened up a burning hand
In it there was a grain of sand.

He dropped the grain into the blood,
The red patch grew into a flood.
From everywhere the girl cried
And in a heartbeat she had died.

I left the room, or it left me...
There was nothing more to see.
Again I stood  out in the rain;
The lonely girl died in pain...

I bury her, and then I pray...
Forever in this spot she'll stay.
I could not save her... I am weak...
Nothing I could do but speak...

Some say that death is just the end
And after it, our souls can't mend..
But if that's so, then what's life for?
And now I wonder... is there more...?

I wrote this as part of an assignment for my English class last year. I kinda like it and kinda don't. As you might see from the first couple of lines, it started out as a parody of "the raven" but sort of transformed into something different from there.

This is a surprisingly dark poem, coming from me.

I really like it. =D

It's freaky though, I had an assignment as few years ago where I began to parody The Raven, I swear I had the same second line as you! haha Yeah, guess there aren't many words that rhyme with ponder haha.

My favorite stanza is your 7th :)

Usually I feel like screaming when people attempt to make poetry rhyme because it'll flow for a while then it'll stop, stutter, and never start back up again (or it does rarely). This, however, is not only a great poem but it RHYMES and FLOWS easily. Only a good writer can pull this off, this decides me: I'm going to devstalk you!
Aww, you're making me blush... :floating:

Thank you so much.
